Dr Peter Wyman discusses how shared experiences in trainings can allow participants to discover one another's strengths, see people in a new way, and form relationships in a more cohesive community that reduce pruning, especially for the most vulnerable.

Discovery, in a network health sense, is the process by which shared activity makes people's strengths visible to each other and to themselves, in ways that private reflection alone does not produce. The mechanism is social rather than introspective: a strength becomes real to a group when the group sees it in action, not only when an individual reports having it.

This idea has firm roots in positive psychology's turn away from a deficit model of wellbeing. Seligman and Csikszentmihalyi (2000) argued that psychology had focused disproportionately on pathology and repair, at the expense of understanding what allows people and communities to flourish; their case was that identifying and cultivating strength is itself a legitimate target of intervention, not merely a byproduct of treating weakness. Peterson and Seligman's (2004) classification of character strengths built directly on this, proposing that strengths are most reliably recognised through observed behaviour in real settings — honesty in how someone handles a hard conversation, persistence in how someone works through a setback, rather than through self-report alone. This supports the Discovery thesis structurally: if strengths are legible mainly through behaviour witnessed by others, then shared activity is the mechanism through which they become visible at all.

Resilience research adds the protective piece. Masten's (2001) influential account of resilience as "ordinary magic" argued that children's capacity to recover from adversity depends heavily on ordinary relational systems, being noticed, valued, and connected within family, peer, and community networks, rather than on rare individual traits. Applied to Discovery, this suggests the stakes are not merely motivational. A young person whose strengths go unseen by their group is not simply missing encouragement; they are missing one of the ordinary mechanisms through which resilience is built and maintained.

Self-determination theory offers the last piece of the mechanism: competence, one of three basic psychological needs identified by Deci and Ryan, is satisfied not just by being skilled but by having that skill recognised within a social context. A group that becomes aware of a member's competence changes that member's felt belonging, not only their self-assessment.

None of this constitutes network health-specific evidence for the Discovery finding as your toolkit frames it. These are established, adjacent literatures that would need to be tested directly against a Discovery mechanism, shared training experiences producing group-recognised strength and reduced social pruning, before this section could carry the same evidentiary weight as Prevention or Ecological Validity. Treat it as a reasoned case built from real literature, not as verified corpus evidence.

Context: Discovery in Schools

In a school setting, Discovery would work through activities where students see each other perform, rather than only hear each other described. Positive youth development frameworks, including Search Institute's developmental assets model (Benson), argue that young people build resilience partly through external assets, being surrounded by adults and peers who notice and name their strengths, not just through internal traits. A classroom or advisory structure that creates repeated opportunities for peers to witness one another handling a real task, leading a group project, supporting a struggling classmate and persisting through a hard problem gives Discovery a concrete mechanism in schools. This remains a design inference from general youth development literature, not a school-tested Discovery intervention.

Context: Discovery among Remote IT and Technology Workers

Discovery is structurally harder in distributed software teams, because the ordinary channels through which competence becomes visible watching someone debug under pressure, overhearing them help a colleague, depend on physical proximity that remote work removes. This connects to a corpus finding used elsewhere in this project: Herbsleb and Mockus (2003) found that distributed colleagues report far less awareness of each other's expertise and are more likely to be "excluded from information which was shared by... coworkers" than colocated ones. Discovery in this population would need a deliberate substitute: structured show-and-tell sessions, visible contribution logs, peer recognition rituals, or the incidental witnessing that collocated teams get for free. No study tests this directly; it is an inference from a documented gap, not a tested intervention.
